Southern Cross Trawlers is the name of Sydney duo, Margaret Walters and Don Brian. Both have fine strong voices, eminently suitable for the unaccompanied traditional Australian songs they favour. Maritime songs feature prominently in their repertoire and the two singers trawl through song books, ships logs and elsewhere for unusual material.
Don Brian has an extensive knowledge of traditional Australian song and is constantly finding new material through his research. He has recently returned from five years on Norfolk Island where he gathered unique material for their “Norfolk ‘n’ Good” presentation. He’s a member of the Sydney group, the Roaring Forties.
Margaret Walters has been involved in the Australian folk scene for nearly forty years working as a soloist, in a duo with John Warner, and also as a member of the Roaring Forties, and is described as “a consummate singer of good songs of all pedigrees and persuasions”.
The SCT add two other singers when a larger group is appropriate: Chris Maltby whose photographic memory makes him a powerful asset to any group; and Tom Hanson whose bass voice is his major strength. Chris and Tom are also members of the Roaring Forties.
Margaret and Don have a sample recording of some of their songs as SCT. As a subset of the Roaring Forties their distinctive voices can be heard on several tracks on the CD Life of Brine. Don leads tracks: 4, 11, 15, 19 and Margaret leads tracks: 1, 6, 13, 18, 21.
